6 million households, £150 each, and a letter you should not bin

What happened

On 22 October 2026 the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero confirmed that households in England and Wales will start receiving letters about a £150 Warm Home Discount on their energy bills this winter. Letters began arriving in the week of 22 October and will keep going out until January 2027. About 6 million households across Britain will benefit. For most people the discount is applied automatically. Some households will need to act. If your letter says you need to provide more information, you must contact the helpline before 26 February 2027. Polly Billington MP, Minister for Energy Consumers, urged anyone who thinks they qualify to watch out for the letter, saying energy is essential. The scheme is set to continue through to 2030 and 2031.

Why this matters

The reason the number is 6 million rather than 3 million is a rule change, and it is the part most worth understanding. Every bill payer on a means-tested benefit now qualifies. Before, the rules excluded a lot of households that clearly needed help. When they were widened, nearly 2.3 million extra families received the rebate, including around 1 million families with children. So if you looked into the Warm Home Discount a few years ago and were turned down, that decision may no longer apply to you. Plenty of people never check again after a first no. The timing also matters. UKHSA figures published on the same day estimated around 2,200 deaths in England last winter were linked to cold weather, and named people in poorly insulated homes or in fuel poverty among those most at risk. Help with a bill is not only a financial measure. Ned Hammond, Deputy Director of Policy for Customers at Energy UK, said: "The Warm Home Discount offers vital help for millions of households through the colder months."

What the evidence actually says

A few details are easy to get wrong, so here they are plainly. The £150 is a discount on your electricity bill, not a cash payment into your bank account. For most people it appears on the bill between October and the end of March. The letter is confirmation, not an application form. If you get one saying the discount will be applied automatically, you do not need to do anything at all. The deadline only applies to the people who are asked for more information. For them, 26 February 2027 is the date, and missing it means missing the discount. The government also listed other changes to bills this year for context: VAT was removed from electricity bills in October 2026, bus fares are capped at £2, and around £150 of costs were removed from bills earlier in 2026. The government says last year's Budget took an average of £150 off bills. These are separate from the Warm Home Discount and do not replace it. One more thing, and it is the most important. A letter about money, arriving in winter, to people who need it, is exactly the kind of thing scammers imitate. Stew Horne of the Energy Saving Trust encouraged people to read letters from the UK government carefully and respond promptly if action is needed. The government's own guidance is to avoid suspicious links and never share financial information in response to an unexpected email, text or call.

Qurexa perspective

We visit a lot of homes across Lincolnshire delivering prescriptions, and the households most likely to miss out on this are the ones we worry about anyway: older people living alone, people managing several long-term conditions, and families who have stopped opening post because most of it is bad news. If you look after someone, it is worth asking them one question this week: has a letter come about the Warm Home Discount, and does it say you need to do anything? That is a two-minute conversation that can be worth £150. While you are at it, ask whether they are signed up to the Priority Services Register. It is free, it is run by energy, gas and water suppliers, and it means your supplier knows you may need extra help in a power cut or a cold snap. People on medication that needs refrigeration, or who rely on powered medical equipment, should definitely be on it.

Practical advice

**Watch your post.** Letters are going out from the week of 22 October 2026 until January 2027. Check the doormat and read the letter properly rather than putting it on the pile. **Read whether you need to act.** Most people do not. If yours says you do, contact the helpline given in the letter before 26 February 2027. **Contact your supplier the normal way.** If you want to check something, use the phone number on your bill or your supplier's own app or website, not a link in an unexpected message. **Never share bank details in response to a call, text or email you did not expect.** No legitimate scheme needs them to apply a discount to your bill. **If you are on a means-tested benefit and no letter arrives,** contact your energy supplier to ask. Eligibility is wider than it used to be. **Sign up to the Priority Services Register** with your energy and water suppliers. Free, and useful all year. **Check what else you may be owed.** Many people on low incomes do not claim everything they are entitled to. A free benefits check through Citizens Advice or your local council is worth an hour.

What to know

About 6 million households in Britain will get £150 off their energy bills this winter through the Warm Home Discount. Confirmation letters started arriving the week of 22 October 2026 and continue until January 2027. Most households get the discount automatically; anyone asked for more information must contact the helpline before 26 February 2027. Every bill payer on a means-tested benefit now qualifies, which brought in nearly 2.3 million extra families, so an old rejection may no longer stand. Be alert to scam messages imitating the scheme, and contact your supplier only through its usual channels.
