Scientists have mapped why breathing slowly through your nose calms you down

What happened

Slow nose breathing to calm down is advice as old as it is vague. Everyone from yoga teachers to NHS mental health leaflets suggests it. Until now, nobody could say exactly why it works. A study published in the journal PNAS, and reported widely on 9 September 2026, has mapped a physical pathway in the brains of mice that appears to do the job. The researchers traced a four-step route. It starts at the sensory nerve cells inside the nose, which detect air moving past them. From there the signal travels to the olfactory bulb, the part of the brain that handles smell, then on to a region called the perirhinal cortex, and finally into the amygdala, the small almond-shaped structure heavily involved in fear and anxiety. The striking part is what the speed of airflow did. When the researchers produced slow airflow, at about two breaths-worth of movement per second, the mice showed less anxious behaviour. When they sped it up to around seven per second, the mice showed more. The same effect appeared when the researchers stimulated those nasal nerve cells directly with light, using a technique called optogenetics, bypassing the air entirely. That is a strong hint that the airflow itself, not the smell of anything, is the signal. A short daily session of slow-frequency stimulation also produced lasting reductions in anxious behaviour in a mouse model of anxiety.

Why this matters

Anxiety is extremely common. In England, around one in six adults experiences a common mental health problem such as anxiety or depression in any given week. Breathing exercises are one of the very few self-help tools that are free, portable, have no side effects, and can be used in the middle of the thing that is upsetting you. They are recommended widely for exactly those reasons. But 'it helps you relax' has always been a soft explanation. It leaves people unsure whether they are doing it right, and it makes the advice easy to dismiss as wishful thinking. A mapped circuit changes the conversation. It suggests that what matters is not effort or belief, but a specific physical input: the rate at which air moves across the nerve endings in your nose. That is a much more concrete thing to aim at, and it explains a detail people often get wrong, which is that breathing through your mouth does not do the same job. It also opens a door for treatment. If the circuit is real in humans too, it could be targeted deliberately for people whose anxiety does not respond well to existing approaches.

What the evidence actually says

This was a study in mice. That has to be the first sentence of any honest summary. Mice have a very well developed sense of smell and a nasal anatomy that differs from ours in important ways. A circuit that governs anxiety-like behaviour in a mouse may work differently, or be less important, in a human brain that has far more going on above it. What the study does very well is establish cause rather than just correlation. Because the researchers could switch the nasal nerve cells on directly with light and reproduce the effect, they can say the pathway is doing the work, not just sitting alongside it. That is much stronger evidence than an observational study in people could provide. What it cannot tell you is how much benefit a human would get, how long it lasts, or whether it helps clinical anxiety disorders as opposed to ordinary nervousness. It is also worth noting that this finding sits comfortably alongside a lot of existing human research. Trials of slow breathing techniques in people have generally found modest but real reductions in anxiety and blood pressure. This study offers a plausible mechanism for effects that were already reasonably well documented, which is a good sign. New findings that explain old observations tend to hold up better than new findings that contradict everything.

Practical advice

You do not need to wait for human trials to try slow nasal breathing. It is free and it is safe for almost everyone. Breathe in and out through your nose, not your mouth. Based on this study, that is not a stylistic preference. The airflow across the nasal nerve endings appears to be the actual signal. Slow it down. A widely used pattern is to breathe in for a count of four and out for a count of six. Making the out-breath longer than the in-breath is the part most techniques have in common. Give it a few minutes, not a few seconds. Most human studies of breathing techniques use sessions of five to ten minutes. Do it regularly rather than only in a crisis. In the mouse study, it was a short daily routine that produced lasting change, not a one-off. Stop if you feel dizzy or lightheaded and go back to normal breathing. And if your nose is blocked, treat that first, because it makes nasal breathing genuinely uncomfortable. One important limit: breathing exercises are a useful tool, not a treatment for an anxiety disorder. What to know

This is mouse research, so the size of any human benefit is unknown, but it fits well with existing human studies of slow breathing.
