Tea, coffee and your bones: what a ten-year study of older women found

What happened

Researchers at Flinders University in Australia looked at whether the tea and coffee people drink is linked to the strength of their bones as they get older. Their findings were published in the journal Nutrients, and were reported again in early September 2026. The study used data from a long-running American project called the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures. It followed nearly 10,000 women aged 65 and over for around ten years. The women filled in questionnaires about what they drank, and this was repeated over time rather than asked only once. Bone strength was measured as bone mineral density, usually shortened to BMD. This is a measure of how much mineral is packed into your bones. Lower density means bones are more fragile and more likely to break. Two main findings came out of it. First, women who drank tea had slightly higher bone density at the hip than women who did not drink tea. The difference was small but was statistically significant, which means it was unlikely to be down to chance alone. Second, coffee was more complicated. Moderate coffee drinking, around two to three cups a day, did not appear to be harmful to bone health. But drinking more than five cups a day was linked to lower bone density. The researchers also noticed that these patterns were not the same for everyone. Tea's apparent benefit looked stronger in women with a higher body mass index. The negative link with heavy coffee drinking looked stronger in women with a higher lifetime alcohol intake.

Why this matters

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weaker and break more easily. It is common, and it particularly affects women after the menopause, when falling oestrogen levels speed up bone loss. The consequences are serious. A hip fracture in later life is not simply a broken bone. It often means major surgery, a long recovery, and for some people a permanent loss of independence. That is why the hip measurement in this study is worth noticing. The hip is one of the places where a fracture does the most damage to someone's life. There is also a broader reason this kind of research gets attention. Tea and coffee are woven into daily life in the UK. Millions of people drink them every day without ever thinking of them as a health decision. If something that ordinary turns out to make a measurable difference, it is worth understanding properly. The key word there is 'properly'. Headlines about tea and coffee appear constantly, and they often contradict each other. That is usually because the underlying research is more cautious and more limited than the headline suggests. This study is a good example, as the next section explains.

What the evidence actually says

Here is where honesty matters more than a good story. The first thing to understand is that this is an observational study. It looked at what people already did and what happened to their bones. It did not assign anyone to drink tea or coffee. That matters because observational studies can show a link, but they cannot prove cause and effect. Tea drinkers may differ from non-tea-drinkers in other ways that also affect bone health, such as diet, activity levels or general health. Researchers adjust for the differences they can measure, but they cannot adjust for everything. The second thing is the size of the effect. The difference in total hip bone density associated with tea drinking was a mean difference of 0.003 grams per square centimetre. That is a very small number. It reached statistical significance in a study of nearly 10,000 women, but small differences that show up across a large population do not necessarily mean much for any one person. The researchers themselves made this point. They emphasised that the differences observed were modest, and not enough to justify making major lifestyle changes on their own. That is an unusually clear statement, and it deserves to be repeated rather than buried. Third, there is the proposed explanation. Tea contains compounds called catechins, which some laboratory work suggests may encourage bone formation. Caffeine, in laboratory studies, has been shown to interfere with calcium absorption and bone metabolism. But these effects are small and may be offset by adding milk, which contains calcium. That is a reasonable explanation, but it is a hypothesis, not a demonstrated mechanism in people. Finally, note who was studied. These were women aged 65 and over in the United States. The findings may not apply in the same way to men, to younger women, or to people with different diets. So the fair summary is: an interesting pattern in a large, long study, with effects too small to change anyone's routine on their own.

Practical advice

If you are concerned about bone health, the good news is that the things that genuinely help are well established and none of them involve changing your hot drink. Get enough calcium. Dairy foods, tinned fish with soft bones, leafy green vegetables and fortified plant milks all contribute. Think about vitamin D. Your body needs it to absorb calcium. In the UK, sunlight is not strong enough between roughly October and March to make enough, so official advice is to consider a daily 10 microgram supplement over the autumn and winter. Some people are advised to take it all year round. Do weight-bearing exercise. Walking, dancing, stair climbing and resistance work all encourage bones to stay strong. Swimming is excellent for many things but does less for bone density. Do not smoke, and keep alcohol within recommended limits. Both are linked to weaker bones, and this study found alcohol interacted with the coffee finding. Reduce your risk of falling. Good lighting, removing loose rugs, having your eyesight checked and reviewing medicines that cause dizziness all help. A broken bone usually needs a fall as well as fragile bones. If you have had a fracture from a minor fall, or you have a family history of osteoporosis, talk to your GP. There are scans that measure bone density and treatments that work. If you take medicines for osteoporosis, take them exactly as directed. Some need to be taken in a specific way, such as on an empty stomach or while sitting upright, and your pharmacist can explain yours.
